CAD House

When: 2nd Year CAD Description: Given a site create a 4 person residence. Concept: The area itself was not residential and had certain safety concerns. I chose to explore a courtyard house so that the residents might enjoy the benefits of a yard with more privacy and security. The second floor was also a large patio area which, while not usable for most of Chicago days, is a perk nonetheless. The exterior grating design was both for privacy and autoimmunity. From the outside you would not know this was a residence and that was the idea.

Bridgeport Library

When: 2nd Year Architecture Studio Project: Materials Study: Wood Description: Given a site in Bridgeport, at the corner of Halsted and 34th street, design a library. Concept: Following the Weekend House project, I continued the concept of distinctive roof construction. The plan is slave to a grid system, so that the “disorder” of the roof/canopy system can be rooted into logic. The grid is extended tot he roof construction but then the varied heights in the roof operate as extruded rectangles and rectangular voids. The varied heights are meant to emulate a mini city of sorts, and appear as a…

Tokyo Detail

When: 2nd Year Architecture Studio Project: Materials Study: Wood Detail Description: Model with construction accuracy the Weekend House near Tokyo by Ryue Nishizawa. Constuction: This is a large scale detail of the Weekend House. Once again the roof was a complex element, with the joints being constructed with greater depth.

Tokyo House

When: 2nd Year Architecture Studio Project: Materials Study: Wood Description: Model with construction accuracy the Weekend House near Tokyo by Ryue Nishizawa. Constuction: The roof was by far the most complex element. It was constructed as a single unit with painstaking detailing of the connection joints. To make matters more difficult, there is a one degree slope. Partner T. Pointer

Block Study

After choosing glass block as a building material there was a shift in emphasis. Concept: After choosing glass block as a building material there was a shift in emphasis. The glass blocks are modeled in wax in order to simulate the diffuse lighting. This was easily my favorite project of the year.

Bricks Studio

When: 2nd Year Architecture Project: Materials Study: Bricks Description: Given a site, design and constuct a small architecture studio. Concept: There is a large section of glass block on the front facade which accents the two story open stairwell. This glass block span is the signature part of both the facade and parti. The wall construction is intended to reexamine the typical cavity wall by inverting its layers. The building has a thin CMU block veneer and a double width brick interior acting as the bearing wall. Whats is stereotypically meant to serve the grunt work is now serving no…

Bricks

When: 2nd Year Architecture Studio Project: Materials Study: Bricks part I Description: Study the real construction of a brick building and recreate in wood model. These pictures actually show a phase 1 & 2 in which we first modeled a flat section and then had to make a second model of a corner which could attach to the first section. Partner: Yea Jee Han
